Pace - what does that even mean?

Pace means pace / tempo / speed and is mainly used by runners as a speed indicator. The pace is given in minutes per kilometer.

How do you pronounce Pace?

Pace comes from English, the phonetic spelling is: pās

Calculate pace

The pace is calculated by dividing the time required (in minutes) by the distance covered (in kilometers). A runner runs 5 km in 30 minutes. What is his pace?

Example:

  • Distance: 5 km
  • Run in: 30 minutes
  • Pace calculation: 30 min / 5 km = 6 min/km

This becomes a little more complicated with “crooked” values

For example, if you run 10 km in 48 minutes, the calculation looks like this:

48 min / 10 km = 4.8 min / km

Now we have to convert the 0.8 minutes into seconds:

0.8 min * 60 = 48 seconds

The pace is therefore 4:48 min / km. With our tool / pace calculator you can save yourself time-consuming calculations. Simply enter your distance and time and our tool will calculate your pace.

How do you measure pace when running?

The pace can be measured while running with a GPS watch / sports watch or a mobile phone with an app like Runkeeper, Strava or Runtastic. In addition to the current pace, GPS watches/apps calculate the average pace and can alert the runner through an alarm if they are running above or below a certain pace during training or competition.

How can I improve my pace?

To improve your running pace, you should train regularly. In addition to regular interval runs, slow runs / recovery runs are particularly important!

What pace is good?

There is no general answer to this question, as it naturally depends on your training level and type. We therefore recommend targeted training with a heart rate monitor.

What pace for walking?

As a walking beginner, one can slowly work their way up from a 12-minute pace (4 km/h). From a pace of 9.5 (6.5 km/h) onwards, it is referred to as Power Walking
